As part of its July 2006 Intersessional Work Programme, the GEF Council approved Phase 1 of the Project on "Sustainable Land Management in the High Pamir and Pamir-Alai Mountains - an Integrated and Trans-boundary Initiative in Central Asia" for Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan. The total cost of the four-year duration of the Phase 1 amounts to US$ 9 million, of which GEF will cover one third, i.e. US$ 3 million. Project implementation arrangements will be finalized at a project appraisal meeting, which will be held on 20-21 November 2006, in Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic.

The preparatory (PDF B) phase of the project has been successfully concluded. The full project proposal was submitted to the UNEP Scientific and Technical Advisory Panel (STAP) for review on 25 November 2005. The STAP Review Comments recommended submission of the proposal to the GEF Council for Consideration. Responses to the STAP Review Comments were incorporated in the full project proposal, which was submitted for review to the GEF Secretariat on 2 December 2005 and resubmitted for inclusion in the GEF June 2006 Work Program on 9 May 2006. Funding is pending GEF Council review of the project.
